Oath Keeper Leader Arrested

Authorities accused Stewart Rhodes, the founder and commander of the far-right Oath Keepers militia organization, and ten other members or affiliates with seditious conspiracy in the violent attack on the US Capitol.

Despite the fact that hundreds of charges had been filed in the year since pro-Trump rioters stormed the Capitol in an attempt to prevent President Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory from being certified, these were the first seditious conspiracy charges filed in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021 attack.

It represented a significant step forward in the Justice Department’s biggest investigation in history – more than 700 people have been arrested and charged with federal crimes – and showed the effort that has gone into piecing together the most complex cases. The allegations counter a growing chorus of Republican politicians who have openly questioned the gravity of the insurgency, claiming that it could not have been as violent because no one had been prosecuted with sedition or treason.
